Aquarium Fish Pond

Is it ethical to keep (imprison so to speak) fish in aquariums/ponds/whatever?
Let's face it, it is no less than a 'prison', 'cage'! fish are meant to be in their natural environment (no strings attached)
I myself keep fish
I see what you mean, and I get confused too time to time, but I can't quit this hobby.
I'll be honest here, and I give myself the following excuses to justify doing this hobby
In the stand point of really good owners..
1. It's not really a prison. Think of a real prison, you don't get luxury stuff. You might be in danger due to your dangerous mates. You might get abused. And definitely, you can't really "mate" in a prison!
2. We're offering safety in an aquarium, free food, and LOTS of care. A reason why clownfish don't need anemone in a tank, cause they are free from predators. Shouldn't they be happy? They never have to hunt for food anymore. And like the other said, the fish is free from BP's spoilage.
3. Now, are they happy? Seriously, we can never know. It might be swimming well, acting hyped, eating crazy. But are they happy? We don't know. But we won't know if they are unhappy either. We don't know if they prefer our tank or the ocean. So let's not assume a side here, keeping it neutral.
Just like with cats and dogs. They look quite happy, but we really don't know. But by common sense, the pets seem to be enjoying their life with good owners.
4. And my biggest argument is, we eat fish, we eat animals, we are omnivore. If we have to get into the morals of owning a fish, we better solve the fact that we're killing and eating millions of them everyday. But now instead, we're not attempting to harm them, we're attempting to treat them as our precious little puppies.
5. Agreeing with the above poster about human rights and power. Sadly, the truth is, we're exercising our human power, because we have that power. However, while doing that, we responsible owners are doing it with care and love as supposed to abusing them.
Therefore, with the arguments above, I'd say that, for responsible owners, that are giving a good environment to their fish, it's considered ethical.
